about

When I was in residency on the Gettysburg battlefield, I wrote this song as an homage to Civil War soldiers as they lay dying and abandoned while in combat. Of course, this took on a more nuanced meaning during the darkest moments of the pandemic, when loved ones lay dying in the hospital alone, far from family and friends.

lyrics

Oh my stars, I am so low
And you’re so far away
I feel you near me
Every time I say your name

Oh my stars, they are so high
So out of reach and still I try
We’re underneath the same sky
In a field of stars

Oh, the man in the moon, he really likes to stare but
I don’t care
He knows more than he’s letting on
He knows I’m going, going, gone

You came to me inside of a fever dream
You sat right next to me
In the longest lonely hour of my life
I felt your love
I feel your love

Oh, the man in the moon, he really likes to stare
But I don’t care
He knows more than he’s letting on
He knows I’m going, going, gone

You came to me inside of a fever dream
You sat right next to me
In the longest lonely hour of my life
I felt your love
I feel your love

Oh my stars, so far away
Will I live to see another day?
Will I rise with the sum that’s a star in your beautiful sky
Or will I lay me down and die in a field of stars?
Or will I lay me down and die in a field of stars?
